Game Recap
The Eagles and Demons met for 98th time in the series history, and for three quarters it appeared that the Eagles were well on their way to their fifth straight victory in the series as they led 20-0 after three quarters. However, this meeting on Halloween Eve turned into a nightmare for Eagles as the Demons rallied for 21 unanswered points in the fourth period to stun the Northside faithful with a 21-20 come-from-behind victory.
The Eagles took the opening kickoff of the game and quickly drove 75 yards in 7 plays and got on the scoreboard first when QB Briar Van Brunt scored on a 1 yard sneak. Devon Pike kicked the PAT and Northside led 7-0 with 8:44 left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Eagles went on a 11-play, 50 yard drive before stalling at the Demon 33 yard line. The field goal ran onto the field to line up for a 50 yard FG attempt at the 5:37 mark of the quarter. After a good snap & hold, Pike drilled the 50 yard attempt with plenty to spare much to the enjoyment of the Northside sideline and stands. With :15 left before half, Pike again delivered – this time with a 27 yard field goal to give the Eagles a 13-0 halftime lead.
The only score of the third quarter came when Van Brunt connected with senior Brison Williams on a 36 yard touchdown pass. Pike add the PAT and the Eagles now led 20-0 with 10:12 left in the third quarter. The Demon offense did not cross midfield until the midway point of the third quarter and only then after the Eagles were flagged for roughing the punter. The Demons took advantage of the new set of downs and drove down for their first touchdown of the night to make the score 20-7 with 11:21 left in the game. The Eagles could not move the ball, but the Eagle D again forced the Demons to punt, but the Eagles mishandled the fair catch attempt and the Demons recovered on the Northside 32. With 5:47 left in the game, the Demons scored again and the PAT cut the Eagle lead to 20-14. The Demons again forced Northside to punt and took over at midfield with a little under three minutes left in the game. The Eagles tightened and forced a fourth down and seven from their own 47. On fourth down, the Demons threw a long pass and the Northside defender slipped down and the Demon receiver caught the ball all alone around the ten yard line and easily strolled into the endzone untouched. The Demons were flagged for excessive celebration forcing a 35 yard extra point attempt, but Demon sophomore kicker Kyle Floyd calmly drilled the PAT culminating the improbable Demon comeback by a score of 21-20.
The Eagles now will play host to the Colquitt Co. Packers in a showdown for first place in Region 1-AAAAA. The Packers and Eagles enter the contest with identical 8-1 records (5-1 in the region). If the Eagles win, they will finish first in the region and will be a #1 seed entering the state playoffs. A Packer victory will send Lowndes into the playoffs as the #1 seed with Colquitt Co. second, and the Eagles would fall into third position and would have to hit the road for the playoffs.
