Game Recap
The Eagles defeated the Brunswick Pirates in Round I of the AAAAAA State Playoffs on a cold Saturday night on the coast by the score of 24-21 in hard fought, tough playoff game.
After the Eagles took the lead late in third quarter on a 39 yard Cory Munson FG, the Tigers answered with 6:12 left in the game with a 4 yard touchdown run to retake the lead at 21-17. Northside muffed the ensuing kickoff and were forced to start the drive at their own 15 yard line. Seven straight running plays -- 5 from Eric Smith -- moved the ball to the Brunswick 46 with about 2.5 minutes left in the game. QB Marcus Jolly then stunned the Tigers by connecting with Kobie Phillips on quick slant behind the Tiger secondary, and Phillips raced 43 yards for the go ahead TD with 2:10 left in the game. The Munson PAT made the score 24-21. The Pirates would not quit as they drove down to the Eagle 7 yard line in 5 plays - mainly from a 43 yard diving pass completion - to set up the thrilling finish. On second down from the seven, Kentrez Anthony intercepted a Brunswick pass at the goal and returned out to the 15 yard line with 16 seconds left in the game. The Eagles then ran out the clock for the hard earned road playoff victory.
The Eagles hit the road again next week in Round II to face their playoff rival the Tucker Tigers. This will be the fifth time the Eagles and Tigers have faced each other in the playoffs with each team winning 2 games. The Tigers are ranked #1 in AAAAAAA with a 10-1 record after last week's 55-7 first round victory.
