Game Recap
The Eagles hit the road to Columbus to take on the Hardaway Hawks on a Thursday night in search of their 10th win of the season. In a game played in on and off downpours of rain, the Eagles easily defeated the Hawks by a score of 51-14 to secure their tenth win of the 2011 season, and in doing so, Northside set a new Georgia High School Association team record with this being the 14th consecutive season that the Eagles have recorded 10 or more victories in a season. Northside had previously shared the record with Charlton County High School. The streak began with the 1998 season under Coach Conrad Nix who coached the Eagles for the first 12 of these seasons. Coach Kevin Kinsler took over the head job after Coach Nix retired two years ago and has continued the streak for the last two years. Over this 14 year period, Northside has an overall record of 166 wins against 17 losses for a 91% winning percentage!
The game kicked off in a heavy downpour and the Hawks had trouble holding onto the ball which led to a couple of easy Eagle scores. In the first quarter Miguel Williams scored on a 15 yard run, Jack Montgomery hooked up with Keshun Hill on an 11 yard touchdown pass, Marquez Moore recovered a Hawk fumble in the endzone for a TD, and finally with 44 seconds left in quarter, Marte Polk ran in from 8 yards out. Dillon Mixon connected on all 4 PATs for a 28-0 Northside lead at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, Curtis Martin scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 3 yards respectively. Dillon Mixon kicked the first PAT and sophomore John Tignor hit the second. With 36 seconds left in the quarter, Mixon drilled a 27 yard field goal to give the Eagles a 45-0 halftime lead.
The Eagles started mass substitutions in the third quarter and Hardaway managed two rushing touchdowns. With 5:31 left in the game, senior Tevin Perkins scored on a 21 yard touchdown run for the Eagles for a final score of 51-14. The Eagles finish the regular season at 10-0 and as Region 1-AAAA champions for the second year in a row. Northside now enters the state playoffs as the #1 seed from Region 1-AAAA looking to avenge their first round loss last year when they host the Glynn Academy Terrors of Brunswick, GA at the MAC next Friday night.
