The Northside Eagles defeated the Northside-Columbus Patriots by a score of 38-12 on a rare Thursday night game at the MAC to run their 2011 record to 9-0, and with the victory, the Eagles clinched their second consecutive Region 1-AAAA championship.
On the first play from scrimmage, junior Rodney Levine intercepted a Patriot pass to set the Eagles up in great field position. With only 1:06 off the game clock, senior Marte Polk scored on a 5yd touchdown run to give the Eagles the early lead. At 4:06 of the first quarter, Polk added his second rushing TD – this time from 10 yards out. With 1:39 left in the period, junior Curtis Martin scored on a 1yd TD run and Dillon Mixon’s third PAT of the opening period made the score 21-0 in favor of the Eagles. Northside-Columbus got on the board with 69yd touchdown pass with 4 seconds left in the first quarter. Senior Devinci Sanders blocked the extra point to make the score 21-6 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, quarterback Jack Montgomery hit tight end Jaleel Morris on a 14 yard scoring strike to for a halftime lead of 28-6 with Mixon’s PAT.
The Eagles opened the second half with a 10 play / 77 yard drive that ended with Polk scoring his third touchdown of the night on a 5yd run. Mixon’s PAT pushed the lead to 35-6. Mixon would add to the lead again at the 3:42 mark of the third quarter when the senior drilled a 46 yard field goal. The Patriots ended the scoring on the night with 7:43 left in the final period when they score on a 5 yard run against Eagle subs.
The Eagles will travel to Columbus on Thursday for the final regular season game of the year when they take on the Hardaway Hawks.
