Game Recap
The Eagles defeated the Hawks by a score of 37-14 on Saturday night to finish the year with a perfect 10-0 record and a Region 1-AAAA championship. The 10 win season marked the 13th straight year that Northside has recorded at least 10 wins which ties a GHSA state record.
The Eagles took the opening kickoff of the game and drove 50 yards in 10 plays ending in Briar Van Brunt’s 9 yard touchdown run. Dillon Mixon’s PAT gave Northside a short lived 7-0 lead as Hardaway’s elusive Austin Scott took the ensuing kickoff back 97 yards for a touchdown to tie the game back up.
After an exchange of punts, the Eagles responded with a 3 play – 98 yard drive culminated by a 76 yard touchdown pass from Van Brunt to Stephon Cross at the 9:03 mark of the second quarter. Mixon’s PAT gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead. Five minutes later, Van Brunt went to the air again and hooked up with Miguel Williams for a 35 yard touchdown pass --- Mixon’s PAT gave the Eagles a 21-7 lead. On the last play of the second quarter, Mixon drilled a 32 yard field goal to send the teams into halftime with the Eagles on top by a score of 24-7.
Hardaway opened the second half with an impressive touchdown drive led by Scott and ended with his 22 yard touchdown run to cut the Eagle lead to 24-14, but the Hawks would get no closer on the night. With 3:53 left in the third quarter Stephon Cross was in the endzone again – this time on a 10 yard touchdown run; the conversion was no good to make the score 30-14. Northside ended the scoring with 2:08 left in the third when Van Brunt threw his third touchdown pass of the night. Chris Vickers hauled in the 31 yard strike and made a good move to shake the defender and scamper into the endzone. Mixon’s PAT was good for a final score of 37-14.
The Eagles enter the state playoffs next week as the number one seed from Region 1 and host Whitewater from Region 3 on Friday night at the MAC.
