The Eagles traveled to Bainbridge, GA to take on the Bearcats in the first region contest for both teams. Bainbridge took charge early when they went on quick 4 play-65 yard drive ending in a 10 yard touchdown pass with less than 2 minutes gone in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, senior Steven Nelson returned the kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, but the score was called back because of a penalty. The Eagle defense forced punt the next time Bainbridge had the ball and this time Nelson returned the punt 48 yards for a touchdown with 5:48 left in the first period and this one stood. This marked the sixth time this season that Nelson has returned a kick/punt for a touchdown but three have been nullified by a penalty. Dillon Mixon kicked the PAT and the score was tied at 7. At 6:23 of the second quarter, the Eagle offense got on the board when Briar Van Brunt connected with Stephon Cross for a 5 yard touchdown pass. Mixon’s PAT gave the Eagles the lead at 14-7. The Bearcats answered right back with a 62 yard touchdown run to tie the game, but the Eagles promptly responded with a 8 play/52 yard drive ending with Van Brunt again hooking up on a touchdown pass – this time from 6 yards out with 24 seconds left in the first half. Mixon’s PAT made the halftime score 21-14.
The Eagle defense began to take control of the game in the second half as the shut out the Bearcats over the final two quarters. Senior cornerback Joe Sturn had an interception and Deillouse Jackson spearheaded the Eagle rush defense to slow down the Bearcat veer offense in the second half to allow Northside to take control of the game. Dillon Mixon helped Northside with the battle of field position by putting 5 of his 6 kickoffs into the endzone. Van Brunt ended two long second half drives with touchdown runs of 10 and 15 yards. Mixon was perfect on the final two PAT to end his night 5 for 5 on his conversions.
The Eagles are now 1-0 in the region and 4-0 overall. Northside now prepares for the annual city showdown with rival Warner Robins High School next Friday night.
