The Eagles faced the Union Grove Wolverines in the State Playoffs for the second straight year, and for the second straight year, the Northside prevailed in a hard fought contest by the score of 21-10.
The game did not start well for the Eagles as the Wolverines intercepted a Northside pass on the first play from scrimmage. The Eagle D did not yield a first down and forced Union Grove to try a 22 yard FG which they made with 10:26 on the clock to take an early 3-0 lead in the second round contest. The Eagles could not move the ball on their next possession, but the defense again rose up to force a short punt. This time Briar Van Brunt led the Eagles on a quick 3 play 42 yard drive culminating with Van Brunt scoring from 4 yards out. Senior Devon Pike added the PAT and the Eagles had a 7-3 lead. However, the lead would last only about 13 seconds as the Wolverines would take the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to regain the lead at 10-7 with 5:02 left in the first quarter. After an exchange of punts, the Eagles went on a 13 play / 62 yard drive that ended when Van Brunt scored again – this time from 1 yard out – with 36 seconds left before halftime. Pikes PAT made the score 14-10 at the half.
In the second half, the Eagle defense continued to dominate the game. The Eagles held Union Grove to 119 total yards for the game. With 3:06 left in the third quarter, the Eagles ended the scoring for the night when Van Brunt connected with Shaquille O’Neill for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Pike’s final PAT made the score 21-10. The Wolverine final drive of the night ended when Dontavious Anderson intercepted a Union Grove pass in the endzone with less than 2 minutes left in the game. Northside took a couple of kneel downs to end the game and advance to the 3rd round of the state playoffs to take on Peachtree Ridge at the MAC on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
