Game Recap
The Northside Eagles’ 2008 season came to a sudden end in Kingsland, GA as they fell to the Camden Co. Wildcats by a score of 28-20. Before a packed house, the Wildcats jumped off to a 14-0 lead by the 6:00 mark of the second quarter. The Eagles responded with a determined ‘2-minute’ drive before half that culminated with a 6 yard TD pass from senior Joe Scott to fellow senior Evan Arthur. Arthur’s TD reception was the first of his career. Devon Pike’s PAT cut the Wildcat lead to 14-7 with 0:27 left before halftime.
The Eagles came out roaring in the second half behind tough running of senior Xavier Bacon. Bacon brought to Eagles to within 1 point with a 35 yard TD run at 8:03 of the third quarter. The PAT failed, however, and the Eagles still trailed by a score of 14-13. Northside finally completed the comeback five minutes later when Bacon ran in from 14 yards out, and with Pike’s PAT, the Eagles finally led by a score of 20-14. The Wildcats would prove their metal, however, by answering Northside’s surge with a 4 yard TD run with 8:32 left in the game and their PAT put them in the lead again by a score of 21-20. The Eagles muffed the ensuing kickoff which pinned them inside their 10 yard line. The Camden defense stiffened and forced an Eagle punt. A 21 yard return set the Wildcats up at the Northside 32 yard line from where they would score another rushing touchdown from 1 yard out with 4:10 left in the game. The PAT made the score 28-20, but Eagles had one last gasp to tie the game after receiving the kickoff. They quickly moved the ball out to near midfield, but a fumble and recovery by the Wildcats ended the final drive of the season for the Eagles.
Northside finished the season with a record of 10-2 – the eleventh straight year that they have posted at least 10 wins in a season. The seniors ended their 4 year high school careers with a record of 54 wins and 3 losses.
