Game Recap
The Eagles’ first road trip of 2008 found Northside in Columbus, GA taking on a talented Carver Tiger team in another showdown of 2007 state champions. Things started off rough for the Eagles and remained that way the entire game. Northside fumbled the opening kickoff of the game, and the Tigers scored a TD on a 1-yard run with only 2 ½ minutes off the clock. No one knew at the time that the ensuing PAT would turn into a critical play in the game; senior Eric Fields blew up the middle to block kick and the score stood at 6-0 in favor of Carver.
The score remained this way until midway of the second quarter when the Eagles culminated their best offensive drive of the game with a 3 yard touchdown run by quarterback Joe Scott. Devon Pike was perfect on the PAT and the Eagles led 7-0 with 7:20 left before halftime. Carver continued to have success running the ball throughout the rest of the game, but the Eagle defense employed the classic “bend-but-don’t-break” to perfection as they kept the Tigers out of the endzone. The game remained in doubt until the very end when Carver lined up for a 35 yard FG attempt with 13 seconds left on the 4th quarter clock. This time the Tigers got the kick off, and it was strong but sailed just wide left as the Eagles survived a big scare on the road to run their record to 3-0 on the season. The Eagles now enter region play for the next 7 regular season games as the take on the Valdosta Wildcats at the MAC next Friday night.
