Northside opened sub-region action with its first ever game against the Jones Co. Greyhounds in Gray, GA. The Eagles posted its first shutout of the season and had an outstanding passing night on offense as they disposed of the Greyhounds by a score of 45-0.
Senior Charles McKenzie intercepted a Jones Co. pass on the third play from scrimmage and set the Eagles up at the Greyhound 34 yard line. After the Marques Ivory connected with Kevyn Cooper for a 25 yard completion on their first offensive play, Jones Co. stiffened and forced a field goal attempt. Freshman Devon Pike split the uprights from 25 yards out and the Eagles led 3-0 with 9:01 left in the first quarter. The Eagle D then forced its first of four “3 & Outs” for the night and the offense took over with great field position again at the Jones Co. 31. Six plays later, senior Deonta Jordan scored from 1 yard out and Pike’s PAT made the score 10-0 with 4:49 left in the first quarter.
The Greyhounds put together their best drive of the night on their next possession - a nine play drive highlighted by a 41 yard pass completion that put them in Eagle territory for the first of only 2 times all night. Three penalties and a sack followed the completion, however, and they were forced to punt again from their own 36. The Eagles then went on a six play – 57 yard drive ending when Ivory connected with a wide open Nick Bass for a 31 yard touchdown on an obvious blown coverage. Pike added the PAT and the score stood at 17-0 with 9:16 left before half. After another “3 & Out”, the Eagle O took over on its own 45 to begin its next scoring drive. The six play drive saw Ivory go 3 for 3 passing and ended when Tijuan Green ran into the endzone untouched from one yard out, and after Pike’s PAT, the Eagles led 24-0 with 4:55 left in the second quarter. The Eagle D posted another “3 & Out” and set the O up at midfield. Seven plays later at 1:23 of the second, Ivory rumbled into the endzone from 21 yards out; Pike added the PAT and the Eagles led 31-0 at the half.
Northside returned the second half kickoff to its own 31 to begin in what would be the first unit’s only action of the second half. This six play – 69yard drive saw Ivory punish Jones Co. on a 31 yard run and then connect with Nick Bass again on a 21 yard TD pass at 9:27 of the third. Devon Pike ended his perfect night with his fifth PAT and the Eagles now led 38-0. Second and third teamers finished up the night for the Eagles on both sides of the ball. Backup QB Joe Scott led the Eagles on their final scoring drive of the night when he hooked up with Tracey Lawrence on a beautifully executed 28 yard shovel pass for a touchdown. Ricardo Negron added the PAT and the scoring was over at 45-0 with 5 seconds left in the third quarter.
Ivory (8 of 11 / 130 yds / 2 TDs) and Scott (6 of 7 / 93 yds / 1 TD) combined for 223 passing yards on 14 completions in only 18 attempts, and the Eagle defense held the Greyhounds to negative 9 yards rushing on 20 attempts in the shutout to run the Eagle record to 4-0 and 1-0 in the sub-region (4B-AAAA). The Eagles now face a short week of preparation as they welcome Dutchtown to the MAC on Thursday night for another sub-region matchup.
